"In my work I explore the dramatic potential of color and light to express landscape moods and the mystery of distance. I am often told that my work is serene. But in reality my process is more like the dark night of the soul. For me making art is about problem solving and all the frustrations of solving for x when there are no answers at the back of the book. It’s about learning to accept that maybe I shouldn't be playing pieces for the clarinet when what I’ve been issued is a tuba. Making art for me is about keeping skills honed, confidence and vision sustained, managing strengths and being patient with weakness. It is about backing myself into a corner and looking for the exit. At its best, making art is about acceptance, about learning to be happy, about having fun, about being still, about balancing, about seeing, about listening."
